About Department:
Department of Chemistry, an integral part of Govt. Science College, Jabalpur was incepted in 1946 with the vision of establishing a centre of excellence in chemical science and inculcating a scientific attitude with cognitive aptitude for academics & research in young individuals. Its glorious journey is embarked with the introduction of B.Sc. in 1946 under the leadership of Prof. Sure and M.Sc. in 1950.Later, Biochemistry was started as an optional subject with combination of chemistry and zoology in the session 1999-2000. The UG and PG courses are constantly revised and upgraded by the Board of Studies of the department to cater the recent advances in chemistry.
Department of Chemistry is endowed with beautiful ambience and substantial space in the huge infrastructure of the College. There are spacious, well-equipped laboratories for students to make learning more interesting with gain of practical skills, understanding of the subject. The department has six research labs equipped with facilities for research work of international standard. The department has proved its potential as a premier research center by availing grants from DST,DRDO,UGC,CSIR,BRNS,MPCST and other funding agencies. The Central Instrumentation Facility Laboratory (CIFL) of the College is also being run by this department with sophisticated instrumentation facilities which facilitates faculty, students of college and other institutions as well. The rich departmental Library is housed with more than five thousand books and several journals of high academic standard, provides easy access to faculty & students. Smart class-rooms in the department helps faculty & students to keep pace with new age technologies.
The major asset of the department are its qualified, experienced and learned faculty as well as bright students which constantly strives to maintain academics & research standard in chemical education. The eminent faculty of the department disseminate their knowledge by innovative methods and modern technologies. Many research scholars have been awarded Ph.D. degree under their supervision. Major thrust areas of research include polymer chemistry, nanotechnology, co-ordinationchemistry, natural products, environmental chemistry, water remediation etc.The research accomplishments of the faculty and scholars are acknowledged by the scientific world of national and international repute in the form of patents, publications, books, book chapters, reviewer, resource person, subject expert, chairperson in various national and international academic ventures.
The department has adopted fruitful practices through participative teaching, brain storming sessions, experiential learning, seminar presentations, projects, internships, mentor-mentee scheme, liquid &hazardous waste management, lecture series, training programs , conferences, educational tours, SDG programs, value added course etc. for the betterment &upliftment of the department. It has also initiated Prof. R.P. Tiwary memorial scholarship from the past two years to meritorious PG students.

SUBJECT
Central Instrumentation Facility Laboratory :Polymer research lab was started in 2000, with the aim to provide research guidance to students of M.Sc.passouts in Chemistry who are interested to pursue their carrier in Research. The major topics on which research is carried out are polymers and their synthesis, drug delivery systems, nanoparticles and their polymer composites, biomedical applications of polymers and finally polymers for electrical energy storage devices. The Central Instrumentation Facility Laboratory (CIFL) of the College is also being run by this department. High precision electronic balance, HPLC system,FTIR UV-Visible and Atomic Absorption spectrophotometers,X-Ray Diffractometer are available in this laboratory.Natural Product Research Lab was started in 1998, with the objective to develop methods and protocols to extract valuable natural products. Various analytical techniques has been developed in the lab. The prime focus was given on extraction and instrumental techniques (GC-MS, LC-MS, MPLC, IR, PMR, 13C-NNR, MS and FIA) and segregation of the valuable Natural Products. Some of the laboratory students were also working on derivatization of the Phytochemical components, Micro-wave Synthetic Chemistry.Bose Memorial Research Lab (BMRL) Bose memorial research lab is one of the reputed ,prestigious research labs of the College. The lab owes an exceptional track record of almost more than 30 years. It received a funding of about 80 lacs in last several years from different funding agencies like DRDO, DST, CSIR, BRNS etc. More than 65 Ph.D. s, 400 research papers, women scientist, several Young Scientist Awards by various agencies have been produced from BMR lab. The prime focus of research areas include polymer based materials, nanoparticls for numerous biomedical applications viz.cancer nanotechnology, health care, wound dressings, water purification, reduction of antibiotic side effects by adsorption, controlled drug delivery systems, treatment of textile colour by photocatalytic activity, conducting polymers etc.Coordination Chemistry Research lab (CCRL) has started in 2004, with aim to synthesize and characterize metal compounds. The laboratory members are currently being involved to investigate catalytic and biological potency of main group and d-block metal based-compounds. Molecules designed have advancement in field of Biomimetic Chemistry, Metal Nanoparticle preparation, Metallo-pharmaceuticals, Green catalysis and Computational Chemistry.
