Department of Military Science
Introduction of the subject:
Military science subject has been studied at the undergraduate level in this college since 1972. This subject is taught only in this college in the entire Mahakoshal region. It is an interdisciplinary subject. Under which India’s armed forces, para-military forces, military history, the military system, war and warfare, weapons, defence research and development, geostrategy, geopolitics, security threats and problems, defence policies and doctrines etc are being taught.
Subject group and student strength:
In session 2025-26, total 160 students have opted military science subject as major, minor and open elective groups.
Modern teaching methods and activities:
Use of modern teaching methods and tools play an important role in the teaching and learning process. Apart from traditional teaching in the department, use of Over Head Projector (OHP), LCD projector etc. Innovation activities like PPT presentations, documentary films, debates, group discussions, student lectures/presentations, newspaper cutting, model making, sand models etc. are used for teaching.
Departmental Library:
Apart from the main library of the college, there is a separate departmental library which has 1469 reference/textbooks/research journals.
Departmental Museum:
Military Science department has its own museum which has various weapon models like Akash, Trishul, Agni and Prithvi missiles, INS Shankul, INS Virat, INS Ranvijay, INS Gomti, INS Nilgiri warship & submarine. Apart from this various tanks, fighter aircraft, artillery, rifles models are displayed in the museum.
Educational Visits:
Educational visits constitute an important component of experiential learning in the Department of Military Science. In previous years, students have regularly undertaken educational tours to local defence museums with the objective of gaining practical knowledge about India’s Armed Forces, weapon systems, military traditions, and the nation’s glorious military history. These visits help bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world military understanding. For the academic session 2025- 26, an educational visit to the Grenadiers Regimental Centre, Jabalpur, has been planned to provide students with first-hand exposure to regimental organization, military heritage, and defence practices.
Online Lecture:
Under the Academic Society programme of the department, an online lecture titled “Armed Forces and Military Psychology” was organized on 15 January 2026 on the occasion of Indian Army Day. The lecture was conducted for students of Military Science with the aim of enhancing their understanding of psychological aspects related to military training, leadership, morale, and operational effectiveness. The programme provided valuable academic enrichment and encouraged interaction with contemporary perspectives in military studies.
Participation of Faculty in Academic Activities:
Faculty members of the Department actively engage in various academic and research-oriented activities. Their contributions include research paper writing, book authorship, and presentation of research papers at national and international conferences and seminars. Such scholarly involvement reflects the department’s commitment to academic excellence, research development, and the promotion of defence and strategic studies as a significant academic discipline.
Student Participation in Co-curricular Activities:
Students of the Department of Military Science actively participate in a wide range of co-curricular and extracurricular activities. They contribute significantly to programmes conducted under the National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS), sports competitions, and other academic, cultural, and extension activities at the college, university, and state levels. These engagements foster discipline, leadership qualities, teamwork, and overall personality development, aligning with the core objectives of military education.
Proposal for Introduction of Postgraduate Programme:
The Department of Military Science is planning to introduce a Postgraduate (PG) programme from the academic session 2026-27 with the objective of expanding academic opportunities and promoting advanced studies in defence and strategic affairs. In this regard, all necessary correspondence and required documentation have been submitted to the concerned authorities for approval. The proposed programme aims to strengthen higher education and research in Military Science, enhance academic progression for undergraduate students, and contribute to the development of skilled human resources in the field of national security and strategic studies.
